FAQs
How much does it cost to hire a motorhome in the UK?
The cost of renting a motorhome in the UK varies based on several factors, including the size and type of the vehicle, the time of year, and the length of your rental period. Prices generally range from around £50 per day for a small, basic motorhome to over £200 per day for a larger, more luxurious model. Many rental companies have a minimum rental period of at least three days, with longer minimums during peak season. Additional costs may include extra drivers, bedding and kitchen equipment, and insurance. At Vanlife Rentals, our prices for Matilda and Dolly start from £100 per day during off-peak periods and £120 per day for peak season, with a minimum of a three-day booking. Check our availability calendar for more details.
What kind of driving license do I need to drive a motorhome?
Most standard motorhomes can be driven with a Category B driving licence, covering vehicles up to 3,500kg. For larger motorhomes weighing between 3,500kg and 7,500kg, you will need a C1 licence entitlement. Ensure you have the correct licence before planning your trip with a larger motorhome.
Where can I park and sleep in a motorhome in the UK
Parking and sleeping in a motorhome in the UK requires awareness of local laws and regulations. Land in the UK is typically privately owned, so permission from the landowner is needed if parking outside designated caravan or motorhome parks. Wild camping in remote locations also requires landowner permission. There is no legal right to park beside the road, though the Highways Act 1980 and the Caravan Sites and Control of Development Act may apply. Public car parks are regulated by Traffic Regulation Orders, which vary by location. Research and ensure you’re in a safe and legal location before settling down for the night.
Is it legal to sleep in a motorhome on a residential street?
There are no specific laws prohibiting sleeping in a motorhome on a residential street in the UK, but your vehicle must be fully road-legal and have passed its MOT. Consider that sleeping on a residential street may not be appropriate or comfortable for everyone.
